Head Speed MP 2024 Review: The All-Rounder Gets Even Better
Head's Auxetic update transformed the Speed line. We've been playing the MP for three months — here's the honest verdict.
## Background
The Speed line has always been Head's all-rounder — positioned between the control-oriented Prestige and the power-oriented Radical. The 2024 version is the first Speed to use Head's Auxetic material technology, the same innovation that transformed the Boom line two years ago. After three months and more hours than we can count, here's where we landed.
What changed with Auxetic
Auxetic is a structural material that expands when stretched, rather than contracting. In practice, it gives the frame a livelier, more responsive feel at contact. The 2024 Speed MP feels noticeably more connected than its predecessor — there's more feedback through the handle, and the ball seems to sit on the strings for a fraction longer. Players who found the previous Speed MP a bit hollow will appreciate the update.
Power and control
The Speed MP 2024 sits comfortably in the middle of the power-control spectrum. It's not going to give you free pace the way a Pure Aero does, and it's not going to demand technical perfection the way a Prestige Pro does. Groundstrokes feel solid and predictable. The 100 sq in head gives a generous enough sweet spot that mishits don't punish you too badly, but the 16x19 string pattern and balanced weight distribution give you enough control to work the court.
Serve
This is where the Speed MP consistently impresses. The balance point and weight make it easy to generate racket head speed, which translates to pace and spin on serves. It's one of the better serving rackets in this class. Slice serves in particular feel crisp and precise.
Volleys and net play
The Speed MP handles net play better than most rackets in its category. The slightly head-light balance makes it manoeuvrable, and the feel from the Auxetic construction gives you confidence on touch volleys. It's not a serve-and-volley specialist frame, but it doesn't punish you for coming forward.
Who is it for?
The Speed MP 2024 is the right racket for all-court players who want a reliable, balanced frame they can trust across every shot. It's particularly well suited to intermediate and advanced players who don't have an extreme style — heavy topspin bashers or flat hitters with elite swing speed might find more to like elsewhere. If you're unsure what you want, this is the frame we'd recommend demoing first.
Verdict
9/10. The Auxetic update makes a genuine difference. The Speed MP 2024 is one of the best all-round rackets on the market and our top pick for players who want one frame that handles everything well. The only caveat: if you have a very specific playing style, there may be a more optimised option for you. For everyone else, this is an excellent place to start.
