Luxilon ALU Power vs Babolat RPM Blast: Which Poly Is Right for You?
Two polys that dominate the pro tour and club courts alike. We break down the feel, spin, tension maintenance, and who each string actually suits.
The two most popular polys on the planet
If you've ever asked a coach, a hitting partner, or a tennis forum which poly to use, you've almost certainly heard one of these two names: Luxilon ALU Power 125 and Babolat RPM Blast 125. Together they cover a huge portion of the pro tour and sit in the bags of millions of club players worldwide. But they play very differently — and choosing the wrong one is an easy mistake to make.
Feel and playability
Luxilon ALU Power is a co-poly with a slightly stiffer, more dampened feel. Balls come off the stringbed with a low-pitched, crisp response that many players describe as "solid." It's not harsh, but it's not lively either. The feedback is precise — you know exactly when you've hit the sweetspot and when you haven't.
RPM Blast has an octagonal cross-section, which gives it a snappier, more textured feel. The string bites into the ball differently — you can almost feel it grip and release through contact. For players who generate heavy topspin, this is either exactly what they want or slightly too much depending on their swing speed.
Spin production
RPM Blast wins on raw spin potential. The octagonal shape creates more friction against the ball at contact, which translates to higher RPMs for players with fast, brushing swings. Alcaraz, Nadal, and many ATP topspin baseliners have used it for this reason.
ALU Power is plenty capable of spin, but it's optimized more for control and flat-to-moderate topspin ball-striking. Players with compact, flat swings tend to prefer it.
Tension maintenance
Both strings lose tension quickly relative to natural gut or multifilament, which is expected for co-polys. ALU Power has a slight edge in tension stability over RPM Blast, holding its playability window a little longer. Neither string should be left in a racket for more than 30-40 hours of play before a restring.
Who should choose which
Choose Luxilon ALU Power if you hit flat to moderate topspin, prefer a dampened and precise feel, and prioritize control and consistency over maximum spin.
Choose Babolat RPM Blast if you have a fast, loopy swing, generate a lot of topspin naturally, and want the string to amplify that spin. It rewards aggressive baseliners.
